[comp.sys.apple2] having problems with my hard drive...

sk2f+@andrew.cmu.edu (Seth D. Kadesh) (03/03/91)

Anyone out there know anything about Quantum hard drives? I just
bought a Q280 - it's an 80 MB SCSI drive.

Here's the setup:
Rom 01 GS
2.25 MB on a GS Sauce
MDIdeas Supersonic and Digitizer (slot 4)
Apple High Speed SCSI card (slot 1)
1 Apple 3.5 drive, 1 5.25 drive (slot 5 & 6)
modem on modem port
(did I get it all, Greg?)

Here's the problem:
The computer doesn't see a SCSI device attached to the card. The
drive appears to power up correctly (I say appears because although it
comes up and seems to be spinning, I'm not sure if the power supply
is strong enough. Is it possible that this is the problem? Can it be
getting enough power to spin up, but not enough to interact with the
card?), but just sits there. We can hear the drive head moving, and
it sounds like it's working.
We tried to play with the SCSI device numbers, but I don't know how to
set them on the drive. The computer was set at seven, and then we
tried two. Does the computer have to set higher than the drive, or
just different? Anyone know how to set the numbers on the drive?
I know the card works, because it's in my friend's computer, and he's
had no problems with his drive - a Seagate 1096N. I don't think the
drive is trashed, but we even tried a Mac, and it didn't see the drive
either.
Any and all help is appreciated. If anyone has any information
about the drive, please let me know. The guy I bought it from lost
whatever stuff he had. Even a number for Quantum would be nice.
