[comp.sys.apple2] System 5.0.4 crashes and NDA/CDAs

aford@pro-mansion.cts.com (Adam Ford) (03/03/91)

First of all, System Disk 5.04 is a memory HOG. I have an NDA that shows
exactly how much memory is free, purgable, total memory, and memory in use.
I have seen that System 5.04 uses about 1 meg of memory with lots of NDAs
and CDAs installed. I have never had a crash with is yet. Second of all,
sometimes programs use FONTs when you don't even know it. If there are NO
Fonts or the one it needs is gone, you get your * prompt.

As far as CDAs and NDAs go, they both go into: root/SYSTEM/DESK.ACCS
Your INITs go into root/SYSTEM/SYSTEM.SETUP

Some one else posted this too, but I'll elaborate more. Go to the "Icon
Info" from your special menu, after sececting the NDA or CDA or INIT that
doesn't load. Just change it black, and select "Icon Info" if it the box
marked INactive is checked, click on the box. This will return ANY init
CDA or NDA to an operable state...

[Stuff deleted]

While 5.04 may use more memory, I must ask how many K of NDA's, CDA's, INITs,
and CDEVs you're using. Remember that the program that you're running takes
up space as well (even if that program is the finder)

Does it take up more memory than a similarly configured 5.0.2??

I assume you mean "click the icon" when you say "change it black." (I'm
imagining someone clicking on it, then trying to choose the color black for
the icon, then later asking how to make an icon black. :-)

You had way too much trailing space on that .signature, so I trimmed it
off.
