The Jet Propulsion Laboratory has been working on mercury drive systems for a long time. In fact, the (now defunct) Halley-Tempel 2 mission was going to use ion drive for the cruise portions. I suggest you contact the Public Education office at JPL for more info (213) 354-4321.
