Just a few words about that proterm demo I posted. It is truly a demo, and as such only partially works. All file saving seems to be disabled -- this means you can't save your setup, or editor files, or any downloads. It does upload just fine however. It also doesn't work with the versacard, which has me rather upset. More on that later. It should work ok with most people's hardware though. There is no printer support, nor extended memory support. It is, however, probably useful for evaluation purposes. I was able to partially get the program up and running with my versacard by selecting the two drivers following it in the menu, but they didn't work "properly." They use a different method of dialing, and while I have nothing against typing atdt commands to dial (since I'm used to it), even that didn't work properly, since I would get thrown into the menu as soon as the remote system answered, and it was rather difficult to get back on-line. Also, after the first time I did this, the modem wouldn't even dial one digit before proterm seemed to send it a cr or some character, making it hang up. I did type the normal init string it uses for the hayes modems, by the way. I ended up dialing using kermit and then booting the demo. This was a pain, since it takes a while to get past all the setup, and the remote system liked to hang up in the meantime. I never did get to really put it through its paces and see if it fixed all my gripes with previous versions. (Heck, at least 2.1 ran with my versacard, even though it didn't buffer output and would lose characters too often when clearing the screen, or sometimes when scrolling). I'm not trying to re-start the proterm wars here, just curious if anyone else tried the demo and wondering how things worked (esp. on non-ssc systems). The demo certainly convinced me -- proterm, despite its bells and whistles, doesn't suit my needs.
