[comp.sys.apple2] Res Type for Packed SHR Screen?

tribby@hpindwa.cup.hp.com (David Tribby) (03/21/91)

I'm working on a GS program that uses lots of resources (windows, icons,
controls, etc.) and it takes a noticeable amount of time (6-7 seconds)
to load them up when the program starts. Rather than having the naked
desktop displayed during this time, I created a title screen. The next
step was packing the screen and saving it in a resource so it could
be retrieved easily during startup. Looking in the Toolbox Reference
Vol. 3 and the Technical Notes, I couldn't find a resource type for
this kind of data. This seems like a common use; are there any informal
standards?

If anyone at Apple is reading...do you plan to define a resource type
for packed SHR screens?

Until I hear a better idea, I'll use $2000 (in honor of the SHR starting
address).

Resource types $1 to $7FFF are for your application's use - you define
the format. Your use of $2000 is a nice choice - it doesn't conflict
with Apple's reserved range and it makes sense. Even if Apple decides
to define such a format, your $2000 will always work and it would take
just a second of find/replace to convert your program over to using the
new number. Although it would be nice to have Apple define every
resource type you are ever going to use in a program, they just can't
do it. There is a rPicture resource that you can use, but no, it's
not packed and creating a resource of that type is a bit of a hastle.
You might want to try using it.
