[comp.sys.apple2] IIGS disk drive woes

phaedrus@milton.u.washington.edu (Mark Phaedrus) (03/24/91)

I have a rev-01 IIGS with two 5.25" disk drives hooked up to the
SmartPort. Last night, the drive cable worked loose from the back of the
machine while it was on (I'd moved the machine and forgot to rescrew the
cables), and now drive 1 always spins whenever the machine is on. It seems
to work despite this, but drive 2 doesn't work at all; drive 1 still spins
while I'm accessing drive 2, and apparently there's not enough power for both
drives to spin up at once.
The dealer, of course, refuses to even look at a IIGS in any context other
than a motherboard swap. Is anyone out there familiar with this problem, and
is it something that can be fixed without swapping the motherboard?
Please respond by email; I'll summarize if there's interest. Thanks in
advance for any help you can give.

You're screwed. The GS Smart Port is the most sensitive part of the GS
motherboard. I used to repair Apple II's and a guy I worked with blew out
three of them. Plugging the cable in when the system is on or reversing the
cable (done usually when connecting to Disk II with a new cable) causes the
smartport support circuitry to blow. Consider yourself lucky - most cases
result in a completely disabled GS. Unfortunatley, unless your good at surface
resoldering and can get access to custom made chips for the GS, your only
course of action is a motherboard replacement.
