Are there any implementations of Conway's Life which work on the
Apple II? Are they public-domain/free/shareware? Thanks

There is a version of Life that runs on the IIs. It is (was?) available
from listserv@brownvm. I think I may still have a copy somewhere, I'll
look. If you cannot get it from brownvm, let me know and I will send you
a copy. If I remember correctly, it is shareware.

In regard to your request about Conway's Game of Life, I have a Pascal version
which was written for an IBM PC. It should be easily converted to BASIC or
whatever language you wish. I also have a C version and a Pascal
implementation which emulates a ciruit to perform the desired calculations.
Take your pick!!!!

There have been DOZENS of life implementations for the Apple II. The first one
I used came on Cassette, ran in Integer basic and used the low resolution
graphics screen to display generations. This was in 1978-79.

There is a very good Prodos 8 based life that came around two or three years
ago. I think it was shareware. It was called Lifelike.System. It ran on
the IIe and better and used the double hires screen do display generations.
It had all kinds of features for editing cells, and even the rules used to
calculate generations. It also came with docs and lots of cool sample files.
I recommend it.
