In-Reply-To: message from aford@pro-mansion.cts.com Actually, I have heard the Apple II, and for that matter the Mac called a PC which they both are, but it might have something to with the fact that IBM named it's first (Personal Computer) the IBM PC.

(never) That's easy -- "PC" is part of the proper name of the IBM toy computers, but not of the proper name of any of the other brands. One sometimes hears "p.c." used to refer to ALL "personal computers", but due to the possibility of confusion with the one specific brand (IBM PC), this is less common than it was before IBM stepped into this market.

Because the "PC" is part of the computer's name. The computer is the IBM Personal Computer, as opposed to, say, the IBM 3090 mainframe. IBM did not consider the PC market at all important when the IBM PC was introduced. All their big computer money came from mainframes, and probably still does. .

IBM Personal Computers never had a real name other than IBM Personal computers.` Note that most people refer to PS/1s, PS/2s, and AT as PS/1s, PS/2s, and ATs. PC stuck around only out of habit. With the exception of the Apple I (which wasn't actually called that until the Apple II came out), Apple has always given their computers an explicit name. IBM has always given their computers numbers (5130, etc.).
