[comp.sys.apple2] serial transfer to mac

ag0514@leah.albany.edu (Andy Goldstein) (04/12/91)

I have a IIgs, and my roomate has Mac+. We want to exchange some files. I
can read his disks (I have HFSlink and a2fx), but he wants to take some of
my sound files. Can we just use a IW2 printer cable between our two serial
ports as a null modem? Or will this be a BAD thing to do....

You can use Apple File Exchange on the Mac end to read Prodos disks...
However, if you really want to use a null modem cable, I don't think a
printer cable would work, since printer cables are supposed to be
different from modem cables (I think the transmit and receive pins are
switched or something). Anyways, using Apple File Exchange would
probably be much faster than using a cable.

Well, a null modem cable would work, but do better than that....

Get Appletalk connectors for both machines and hook them together.

Get more memory for the Mac+ (preferably 4 megs, it *does* have a hard
drive, doesn't it?)

Wait for May 13th and run and get System 7.
*Or* if you're feeling dangerous, find a copy of 7.0b4 (not hard).

Enjoy!

(Well, that's what *I'm* doing, but then again, I'm a developer...)

I've used the IW cable and comms software to manage file transfers between
my MacSE and Apple IIGS, however, that was before the advent of Apple
File Exchange (AFE). Now, I'm unaware of any compelling reason to try
direct connections (unless AFE won't run on a Mac+...).
