I have a friend who just aquired a used hard drive, which (although I haven't seen it) I am sure is a Sider. He needs to know what type of interface this drive uses, and what software is needed to format/repartition it. He doesn't want the various OS partitions anymore, just one for ProDOS. Thanks all. ---- ProLine: crew.wicklein@pro-midnightex Internet: crew.wicklein@pro-midnightex.cts.com UUCP: crash!pro-midnightex!crew.wicklein ARPA: crash!pro-midnightex!crew.wicklein@nosc.mil

Sider uses SASI, and even with an interface card you won't be able to use it with GS/OS, assuming he owns a GS. If not than he can try to get Sider controller from someone. OR... OK, I'm extremely BIAS about this, and it IS a plug for this controller. He can get a RamFAST controller, which not only been an incredible GREAT, AWESOME, MONDO, MEGA - POWERFUL and VERY VERY VERY _FAST_ DMA SCSI/SASI controller. The controller is second to NONE. It's expensive, $170-ish, but worth every penny and (I say this without any reservations) more. The formatting program and all the utilities come on the card on a pair of ROMs and they're quite powerful. The card will format the Siders to 4:1 or 3:1 which is the max the circuitry on the HD will handle. (I forget if it was 3:1 or 4:1) Anyways for SCSI it'll do 1:1 interleave... has also features like selectable look-ahead buffer, 256K cache, 10Mhz controller, DMA, supports 8partition without additional software, and more... "Can't touch this" is an apt phrase. Oh, of course if he can find a SASI card and doesn't own a GS then by all means get it. Otherwise, get RamFAST, Siders controller will not work with GS/OS due to some problem/bug on the controller. whitewolf@gnh-starport!info-apple

Just thought I'd let you know - I used to run my Sider ][ 20 Meg drive
(which uses the same controller as the 10 megger) on my GS rom 3 with NO
problems - didn't even need a special driver. I used to run my board off
of it. To get it to run GS/OS, the manual tells you what to do - it's simple.
Anyhoo, I now have a SCSI 80 MBer, so I just use my Sider as backup cuz it's
too slow (65ms avg access time vs my new 24ms plus Apple's new-ish DMA SCSI
interface...). Just my two cents worth...
