Hmmm, I just got off the phone with an Applied Engineering representative, and he told me that they had just finished a 32k cache for the Transwarp GS. Basically, it's a new daughter board (the second layer board on the TWGS), it'll cost $109 (pricey, imho), and it started shipping friday. He made it sound like it could be a do it yourself kit, because he mentioned popping out the old board, putting in the new one, and cutting a couple of tracers on the back of the card. The only problem with that, is you lose your warranty (my guess). He also said it made a bigger difference than running at 10 mhz (which his current card runs at), and he said it made a big difference, especially for graphics... just to let you know. later Steven Chiang Coming Soon: DreamGrafix 3200 color power stc7@cunixb.cc.columbia.edu America On_Line: DWS Steve Apple IIgs Forever! # With a 4 line .sig, which is all my mailer will post! :P #

Has anyone else had this problem? Anyhow, I can't see what I'm doing, but I got a card from AE about making my transwarp "22%" faster with a 32K catche upgradce. (Kind of like their idea to make ReadyLink nearly functional for $15.) It also says "Install it yourself in just minutes!", so I assume that you can install iut yourself in just minutesl (I can't wait to see what this looks like.) The two trace cuts are at well-marked "bow tie" lands that were clearly intended for this eventuality. The instructions caution you to not cut too deeply (apparently it's a multilayer PC board). The hardest part of the job for me was getting all the pins aligned and shoved into their sockets without bending anything. I found that one long resistor pack on the TWGS needed to be gently urged over a bit to make room for the components on the piggyback cache card. Well, it does work, and for some things I can see an improvement.

I got in touch with Steven Malechek, even had him return my phone call, but never got any more info about this. He told me more than a month ago that he would have the info to me by the end of the week. Can one of you send me the info on the upgrade so I don't have to attack dial Applied Engineering to get through to the Tech. Line? Reason for my anger: well, it's a real bitch to have a 17MHz chip in your hands and not be able to push it all the way because of a small cache. I need an adapter for the socket too, but that's another story. -- + Derek Taubert --> derek@mrcnext.cso.uiuc.edu + Author of : GScii+ + + dat33228@uxa.cso.uiuc.edu + and other neat stuff to come + +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + Access to computers - and anything which might teach you something about + + the way the world works - should be unlimited and total.
