[comp.sys.apple2] Security v1.2 NDA

taob@pnet91.cts.com (Brian Tao) (04/23/91)

Anyone else download this NDA? It's supposed to protect selected
partitions of your HD, or floppies from being read from/written to. I tried
it out on a couple of floppy disks, and a relatively unimportant (and recently
backed-up!) partition on the HD. It seems to work fairly well. I'm worried
about the way it operates, however. It seems to zero out the main directory
(but not the bitmap). Writes to disk produce an error $51 (directory
structure damaged). Testing it in Prosel-16 results in a "backward link" on
the root directory, plus the expected "There are 59456 blocks free marked
used. Show them?" Security sounds like a neat utility, but I don't want to
take the chance that it will munge my hard drive because of a glitch or
programming oversight. So far it has worked as advertised (both protecting
and restoring volumes). Any comments?

Hi there,

if you are wonder, how Security works ??

If you protect any HD then Security will damage the first 4 Blocks
on the selected HD (or any Disk or Partition).

Security encode the Bytes from the Blocks to an Textfile in an save
place on your System directory. Than it will write '0' to the selected
HD. At next Security change the Access Byte, so you can't save any file
to the protected HD.

If the Bootvolume, form where you protect any HD, will crash, than
you can't regonize your protected HD. So i say all time
'HAVE YOU MADE YOUR BACKUP TODAY'

Whenn i start to write Security, i think the best way is that i delete
the selected HD from the Devicelist, but then you can boot from any
Disk and than read/write anything to the 'protected' partition.

Why i write Securty, because i have an brother in law, and all if he
is here at home by me, he go to my //gs and say 'Oh what nice files
on Your HD', and so he never can see it, read it or delete it.

I think Security is an nice and usefull NDA, but use it very carefull !!
If you forgot the Password, wich you use to protect any HD, so call me
and i will help you to unprotect your HD.

I hope You can read my english and best regards from Germany

   Theo
