[comp.sys.apple2] Super serial card

ART100@psuvm.psu.edu (Andy Tefft) (05/08/91)

I have been using non-super-serial cards with my //e ever since my
//c's serial ports have died, and I'm getting rather fed up with
them. I don't expect to be using the //e for very long, but the
rest of the family would probably like to have an SSC so that they
can use an information service called x-press (which may not even
exist any more). So what I am looking for is either a used SSC
or an SSC workalike (NOT a modem that emulates an SSC with an external
modem!)

Are there any non-Apple cards that work just like an SSC?

Does anyone have an old SSC that they'd want to part with for cheap?

By the way, info on x-press (since I brought it up):

It is an information service similar to compuserve or prodigy
except that it is read-only. You can snail mail them comments
that they will put on the service. It comes into the house over
the cable tv cable, which screws into a demodulator that hooks to
the serial port. The software then decodes the incoming information
and lets you access it via menu. New stuff constantly is coming
in in different categories, but you can't possibly save it all,
so you choose what sections you want to read. I guess if you had
a lot of memory and it utilized it, you could run it overnight and
wake up in the morning to a lot of news.

The problem with it is the software only supports a few serial cards.
If I had an SSC I could use zlink or agate instead of this kermit-a2
(which works beautifully, is just dos-3.3-only). But like I said,
I don't want to invest too much in it (since I already have two
other serial cards sitting around getting no use).
