[comp.sys.apple2] dumb Apple Cat II question

6600faze@ucsbuxa.ucsb.edu (Jennifer Mosley) (05/04/91)

I've been using a Novation Apple Cat II modem at 300 baud for awhile now.
I got it used with no software, instructions, or clue about it's use.
Now, I'm wondering if it might be able to handle faster speeds. In a
nut shell, my question is: What is the baud rate of a Novation Apple
Cat II modem?

Thanks for your help.

wow! I didn't know anybody else had a Cat anymore! Well, the
Apple-Cat BY ITSELF can ONLY do 300 baud normally. But it has a very
unique feature. If you call up another person who has another
Apple-Cat, and if you use a program called "Cat-Fur", then you can
do half-duplex 1200 baud! this was really great back 6 years ago when
Cats were THE modem for Apple //'s.. At the time most people only
had 300 baud modems, so the Cat's feature was great.

Anyways, if you buy a card known as a "212 card" and hook it to the cat,
then it will become a real 1200 baud modem. I still have my Apple-Cat
with the 212 card, and I installed it in my old //+. The extra 212
card either has to be installed in another slot, or it can be hooked
on top of the powersupply, and with the cable that comes with it, be
hooked directly into the power supply, therefore saving yourself a slot
that it otherwise would take.

If you need some help with this, just ask.. But if you are
interested in buying a 212 card, then I wish you good luck. Of the
few left, you probably won't find them. The ones that people have
, then don't want to get rid of, and if they would want to, then
then would charge you an arm and a leg for it.

When I upgraed my Cat with the 212 card back about 5 years ago,
I payed $160 for the 212 card! You can buy a 2400 baud nowadays
for that much!!!!!
