Actually (tho' I don't have the reference at hand right now) I beleive that some elevators (for example the "spinning skyhook" I was reminded of in a mail msg today) require materials of strengths of the same order as Kevlar and graphite finbers -- Also, see this month's Omni about other non-rocket (at least non-normal rocket) methods of space transport.
