If you have a PCT, DO NOT USE the msdos disk optimizing program ORG, ver. 1.32. I ran it on my main msdos volume (D) and I am dead! Everything appears to be there but nothing works. Worse of all, my config.sys has binary in it! If I copy programs from my D:/util subdirectory to the floppy in A: or to my /RAM (C:), the programs do not run. Everything hangs. Any suggestions would be greatfully appreciated! PS. I have both volumes of my 40M HD backed up from the Apple side. If worse comes to worse, I can restore everything. I would prefer, however, to resolve the problem from the msdos side. Ray Waxmonksy (waxmonrw@snybufva)

Change your config.sys file back to what it should be (if you can remember). Use something like PC Tools to copy the two hidden files back to the HD too. I'm not an ms-dos expert, but I would say, if that doesn't work, you'll probably need to restore your ms-dos partition. You may be able to just restore the ms-dos file 'partition' on the apple side without doing the whole volume. >Ray Waxmonksy (waxmonrw@snybufva) ---------------------------------------- BITNET-- mquinn@utcvm <------------send files here pro-line-- mquinn@pro-gsplus.cts.com

Well, I tried substituting a good config.sys for the bad one; I added a good autoexec.bat, etc. Nothing worked. So, I bit the bullet and reformated the drive. First, I went into the C Panel and removed the /RAM drive to the apple (I did get that to work but that is another story) and that made my bad volume into C:. I reformatted C: as a system disk (I have a tendency to forget to do this) and then recopied my msdos files from floppies onto C:. I then went back into the PCTs Control Panel and reinstalled the /Ram drive (using the apples /RAM5) which changed C: to D: Once I changed the path in the autoexec.bat, I was okay. There hardest part was finding my "standard" files, particularly my "util" files in all the floppies I have! THe moral of the story is DO NOT USE ORG. What is strange is that it worked fine on my small, 3.9M E: drive which is were I ran it first before running it on D:. If you need a optimize for the msdos volume(s), I recommend VOPT (commercial) or DOG. THe latter is shareware and is safe. I have used it successfully. All in all, no real harm done.
