[comp.sys.apple2] IIGS and AppleTalk

I409@DMAFHT1.BITNET (KRS) (05/10/91)

Hello all you specialists out there...
I got a question conc. the Apple IIGS and AppleTalk.
Since I'm the lucky owner of 2 IIGSs I'd be interested to know if there's
a way to connect them both via AppleTalk together.

Thanx in advance,

The answer is yse, but unless you plan to network them to a printer
or some kind of server, there isn't much point. No one that I know of
has invented point to point file transfer over Appletalk between IIgs's.

Ahh, but that doesn't mean someone hasn't thought about it. :-)
Actually, I'm thinking more of creating a IIgs server than a font of transfer
utilities. These are thoughts...

You can hook up two or more IIGS's together to share one or more printers but
nothing else. The GS's can't communicate with each other if that's what you
wanted to do. And of course, the printers must have Appletalk installed.

GSs *can* talk to each other, but there isn't much software around taking
advantage of it. The only one I can think of offhand was a preliminary
version of a "Chat" CDA that let any number of GSs talk to each other over
AppleTalk.

My opinions are my own, not Apple's.

I believe that the GS version of Rescue Raiders ("Armor Alley")
will work via AppleTalk. I have no information when (or whether) it will
be out, but it was contracted to one of the 'well known' GS software makers...
(i.e. one of the few left in the past year or two)
