i finished putting a menubar inside my window and would like to know how to
change the color of the apple. chances are i can't get the multi-color apple
but a color besides the default (which i think is purple or the like) would
be nice.

There's no option for recoloring the standard "@" Apple menu title. The
funky colors come from the Menu Manager playing with the SCBs of the first
several scan lines, making them use color tables other than number zero.

When you have an Apple menu in some other menu bar, it's getting drawn with
640-mode color 1, which shows up as purple (in the standard [dithered]
color table).

If you want a black Apple, you can use character $14 instead of "@"...this
is a small solid-Apple character in Shaston 8. Unfortunately, it isn't
nearly as big or pretty as the Menu Manager's Apple symbol.

As Dave already said, the Apple menu symbol is always drawn in color #1, and
the Menu Manager changes color #1 at the top of the screen so the Apple logo
looks correct.

However, this can mask a more subtle problem -- there really should be only
one Apple menu per desktop. It's a special menu, and I've seen people really
really confused by WriteIt!, which has the Apple menu in the DA window. They
wanted to know what the difference was between the two menus, and why was one
one color, and what happened to DAs they opened with the WriteIt! menu when
they closed WriteIt!, and why they needed two of them.

The answer to the last one is "You don't need two of them." CK just put it
in to see if it was possible, and he left it in because he didn't want to
take it out. CK describes himself as having the human-interface savvy of
a defense department manual, and will happily point out that you should _not)_
follow his lead on human interface matters.

yes, matt, you're completely correct. however, the situation will never
arise where i have two apples since i don't even use the system menu
bar for my SYS application.

Window menu bars but no system menu bar? Ack. This doesn't sound very
friendly to me. Why are you doing this?
