I am GS owner, interested in getting into the communications available. Can anyone recommend a good modem and suitable communications software? Is AppleWorks GS any good for this sort of thing? Lisa Parry

Hopefully that will help you make a decision. For most modem-surfing, I use ProTerm. It has a lot of great features including numerous terminal emulations and quite a few file transfer protocols. I also use ProTerm when I am going to download files from my Unix account (on The World). For everyday access to The World unix account, I use SnowTerm 2.06 because of its excellent vt100 emulation, and a few other minor features. I am hoping John Snow will hurry up and at least implement Xmodem transfers so I can convert almost exclusively to SnowTerm. I also use SnowTerm when accessing my fiance's Unix account (when I am doing FTP stuff). (My The World account doesn't have FTP access yet, nor as large a disk allotement). For file transfers from my fiance's Unix account, I use Kermit v 3.87. I presently own a Epic Classic II 2400 bps internal modem that I bought about 3 years ago at an AppleFest. The company is now defunct. I plan on buying a new _external_ modem at MacWorld in August here in Boston. (Some of the good telecom programs for the //gs don't work with external modems and I also want to reduce the amount of heat inside my case. I also use America Online's propriety software when I get on my account there. That's about it... -- Kevin S. Green / lucifer@world.std.com / {xylogics;uunet}!world!lucifer
