[comp.sys.apple2] CDEVS folder - limit on files?

bh1e+@andrew.cmu.edu (Brendan Gallagher Hoar) (05/13/91)

I seem to have come across what I feel is a bug in the control panel
or in one of the tools it uses.

From the testing I've done, if there are up to 35 files in the CDEVS
folder, there are no problems. If there are 38 or more, the control
panel says there are no CDEVS in the folder and won't open.

Note that it is the number of FILES in the directory and NOT the
number of CDEVS which seems to cause this strange behavior.

BTW, I was using SS 5.0.4 with NO inits, no desk.accs (other than CP
NDA) and starting with just the General CP activated (still got the
error until I deleted 3 files - thats why I am unsure where between 35
and 38 the limit is). ^ text

Also no special drivers were installed.

The system was clean.

Any idea of why this happened? Can anyone else repeat this?

I have a ROM 01 GS with 4.25 megs, an Audio Animator in slot 1 and a
RAMFast in slot 7.

Note, I have noticed this before with no AA, no RF and only a REV C
card (and only 1.75 M of memory in a ROM 1).

I tested this out by putting files into the CDEV folder. It is true for over
36 files. I had the standard CDEVs, Twilight (which I think crashes my system)
AlertSound, CDEV.data, Twilight folder, plus I put extra files in there to
add to the file count. Any clue from the Apple guys why this is or if this is
known?

[Control Panel hangs if you have more than 36 CDevs]

Well, it ain't a feature...I haven't verified the behavior yet, but I'll give
it a look & make sure the next version is Happy when you have tons of
CDevs.

Isn't there a 64k limit on DAs? Perhaps the buffer that ho;ds the overhead for
the CDEVs in the Control Panel DA is filled at 36 folders. It doesn't check to
see that the files in the CDEV subdirectory are not true CDEVs and allocates
space for them but treats them as inactive. Likely this is a symptom of a bug
work around implemented early in the development cycle.
Mousewrite has a similar problem with directories holding more than 50 files,
each file eats x number of bytes and 50 files fill the directory buffer. Any
files not listed (they are chosen in P8 directory order) can still be loaded
by specifying the full filename. Not directly applicable, but might provide a
hint to the problem?

It crashes with 32 CDevs? I've only got about 10 or so. Where and what are
all the rest of them?
