[comp.sys.apple2] Programs Plus games etc.

fadden@cory.Berkeley.EDU (Andy McFadden) (05/24/91)

I noticed the following in the Programs Plus ad in the June '91 inCider
(it's actually the best part of the magazine):

Broderbund
Wings of Fury (AP & GS)......22

Origin Systems
    Space Rogue (AP or GS).......30

Questions:
- Has anybody seen a //gs version of Wings of Fury? The // version was
amazing. I didn't think they were going to do a //gs version though.

- How about Space Rogue GS? I've seen the Mac version, but didn't even know
there was one for the //, much less //gs-specific.

I'm afraid to call PP in case they don't know the difference between a
"// or //gs" version and a "//gs only" version. Hard to tell from the
catalog itself.

Other points of interest:
- Mac games are starting to creep into the catalog. My impression was that
they had a whole different catalog of Mac stuff that they published
  elsewhere. Weird.

- The elusive Dragon Wars GS is under Interplay, not EA (for $29).

- There's a letter on page 17 from a guy who trimmed his Platinum Paint
disk down to create a bootable disk. He removed the Finder from the
PP system disk, and moved the PP program onto it (presumably on a copy...).
However, he has a small problem:

"Now the program runs fine and loads faster than the Finder, but when I
click on 'Quit', it apparently tried to quit to the Finder. When the
program can't find the Finder, it returns to the beginning (first, or
palette) screen. I have to use another disk to turn off my system or
   reset the computer."

  It's what we've always feared.

Macintosh users on an Apple II.

  Aiiiiiiiiieeeee!! :-)

(the part that was MOST interesting to me was that the guy answering the
question neglected to mention that Open Apple-Control-Reset would "reset
the computer"... instead he recommended using ProSel.)

Hey guys, what's a decent //gs magazine that Programs Plus advertises in?

My inCider subscription runs out in October...

I received my copy last week (ordered from QuestBusters, as I couldn't
find it stocked in local stores). It's very nice, and I'd strongly
recommend that all IIGS game players buy a copy, in order to encourage
further support from Interplay (which is one of the few companies that
seems willing to develop software for the IIGS). The 8-bit Apple II
version of Dragon Wars is good too, so if you have an 8-bit Apple II
with enough memory (//e, //c I think) and like D&D-style adventures,
check it out!

Programs Plus most definitely know the difference between an Apple II and a
GS, they also know the difference between GS specific and GS compatible (in
IIe mode). They have an online database that gives the pertinent information
even if the operator does not know. Just call on their toll-free number (U.S.
or Canada only) and ask if the game has a GS specific version available. Space
Rogue for the Apple II was unimpressive, the graphics were good, but play
lacked in comparison to other Origins adventures. BTW it is possible to
complete the game in 20 minutes with no additional stuff if you know what to
do.

PP has been selling Mac stuff for at least 6 months, probably longer. I have
seen one ad in MacUser, but no more and Mac games have been a part of their
catalog for several months now (in nibble at least). They have not advertised
in the latest issue of nibble, so I too would like to know where they are
advertising. They are probably the best of the mail order companies and
deserve support for all users (Mac as well as Apple II), I have dealt with
them for 4+ years now. ^^^^^from all users

EA no longer supports the Apple II line, Interplay is handling DWGS itself I
guess.

In this case Prosel 16 is likely a better choice since the objective is to
return to a launcher shell. Finder is just too big I guess to be useful in
this person's application. I think this is good advice in the circumstances.
