[comp.sys.apple2] Trying to setup a bbs

skar@plains.NoDak.edu (Keith Skar aka Roddy) (06/19/91)

I am trying to set up a bbs using Magic City Micro BBS software(downloaded
from wuarchive) and a datalink 2400 baud modem. I have the dip switches
for the modem all in original settings (all up I believe) and I have
adjusted the jumpers on the modem
to connect DSR In to DCD out and DCD In to CTS Out
(c&e connected and B & D connected for those who are familiar with the
jumpers on the modem)
then i use the datalinks built in firmware to set the s register to 1
so it will answer the phone...then i exit out of the firmware and load
and run the bbs software.

when I get a call...the modem answers but the bbs program wont come up...
I dont know what else to try...so if anybody can give me anymore suggestions
or tell me what im doing wrong, It would be appreciated....

thanks.

I had a similiar problem when I tried to install my AppleNET BBS with
a Discovery 2400C.
I guess you did the same mistake I did. Setting the ModemJumper to "ANSWER-
MODE" and running a BBS is "doppelt gemoppelt" :-) which means, there's one
ANSWER Mode too much.
If you set your Modem in Answer State it will pick up upon a call and answer
like a "dumb machine" (at least the Discovery did so).
You have to leave your modem in it's default (origin) mode. The BBS Software
takes the rest. I know, cause I saw MCM and I'm using ANET (therefore heh) -
both are ModemWorks based BBSs and they watch the Modem Reg for rings them-
selves (I guess &FN1,cr or &FN5,cr...) so just put your modem in "ORIGIN"
state...

hope this helps

MCM BBS expects the modem to return numeric rather than verbal responses.
If you haven't elsewhere, you have to give the modem the ATV0 command to
get responses as numbers rather than words. And if you don't leave the
modem in answer mode, the software won't get a chance to do anything
because it will never know the phone is ringing. That's the modem's
job, so your ATS0=1 is correct. Since you are using the equivalent of
the ModemWorks "custom cable", everything else you described sounds about
right. Unless you are using the demo version of ModemWorks and it has
already passed 64000 characters, thus going defunct.
