[comp.sys.apple2] ImageWriter Emulator

sysadmin@pnet91.cts.com (Matthew Montano) (06/18/91)

Couple of LaserWriter/LaserPrinter questions...

1) How compatible is the IIp w/ AppleTalk option & w/ PostScript option tot he
Apple IIgs laser printer drivers?

2) Will the ImageWriter Emulator work on the IIp (as above)?

With 5.0.2, (on a floppy disk system), can 512k support the downloading of the
IWEM and then allow a P8 program to print correctly.

I'm usually up on this stuff, but some of these things don't have concrete
answers!

I'm currently running a //gs Rom 3 with slot 1 set up as AppleTalk. I've got
a phone net connector on the back of my gs that has a connector that runs to
my ImageWriter phone net connector and from there to my Hewlett Packard
LaserJet IIp (w PostScript). I have found only one program that burps with
this hookup and that is PublishIt 3. (But PublishIt 3 doesn't have a driver
for the HP IIp, I use the driver for the LaserWriter Plus.) All other
programs I've tried, work fine.

>2) Will the ImageWriter Emulator work on the IIp (as above)?

Yes. When you select the Emulator the printer firsts prints out a piece of
paper saying Emulator installed (just to let you know it's working) and then
its ready. I normally use AppleWorks 3.0 and when I print, I use the
standard ImageWriter commands such as Bold, Subscript, underline, etc, and
they work like a champ.

Couldn't tell you. I already had 5.0.3 installed before the purchase of the
HP LaserJet IIp.

Does any of this stuff have concrete answers? :-)

I've got an HP Laserjet IIp (darn I wish I could upgrade to the IIIp) and I've
got the Appletalk and HP Postscript options. It works just like a Laserwriter
using the Apple Laserwriter printer drivers. Perfectly as an Apple printer
would.

I've never used the IWEM. Once I got a laserprinter, I never want to use IWEM.

As to a 512K GS using the IWEM...well trying to use 5.02 on a floppy based gs
with only 512K is pretty tight. I know I couldn't live that way. As the the P8
question...it really depends on the individual program. I've heard that
Appleworks Classic will work using the IWEM, but that Printshop won't.
