[comp.sys.apple2] BINSCII

TS8RBOTW@MIAMIU.BITNET (Radagast) (01/14/91)

I just got a hard drive last week, with a RamFAST/SCSI card.. I put System
5.04 and all kinds of other neat stuff on it, and I really like it. BUT,
now I can't run BinScii! I always get system error $0055 (sometimes just
loading BinScii, and sometimes only after requesting the pathname of the
file to work on). I know what the error is, but how do I fix it?? I
suppose I could shut off the hard drive and run the whole dang thing from
floppies, but that kind of defeats the purpose of this $787 piece of
equipment.

    Much thanks,
        Tim

Got me. I've had 5.04 and a RAMFast since Xmas and I've been able to run
binscii jest fine...

I can't imagine why this is happening. I've got 5.0.4 on my 80mb
Quantum thru an Apple Rev C. BinSCII (and everything else) works just
fine. How much memory have you got? Can you run any other P8 programs?

Thank you to all the people who sent me BINSCII!

I have 1.0.3 now and am happy. Like I said before, thanks!

I'm glad to hear that you now have 1.0.3 BINSCII. Now we shouldn't have to
wait much longer to see all of the great new files you are going to
BINSCII and UPLOAD to the network to share with others.. :-)

Actually, it would be nice for binscii to move in uuencode's world.
The nice things about binscii are: Better character set used. Ever
look at what uuencode puts out? More symbols than letters. Binscii
takes the benifit of using all the letters and than only requires two
additional characters. I remember the author sending out a test
message to see which characters got eaten the least. Binscii also
sends the decoding alphabet along with the file, so those computers
along the way that love to translate one character for another don't
mess up the file.

What would be great to solve the binscii suffix war is for when version
2.0 comes out, if it will give a default suffix. That is the most likely
way to set a standard. I'm looking forward to the time when the author
(can't reliably remember his name) gets time to finish it and distribute it.

There's been lots of talk regarding BinSCII lately. Here's the deal:

Actual development has started (yow!). I'm writing in C, but I really
need to buy ORCA 1.2 if I'm gonna actually compile it (can anyone
recommend a good buy mail order?)

The C code will be OS- and machine-ignorant. Those wishing to port to
other platforms will need to supply the front end UI and the back end
OS interface and that's it. The engine will be complete. I'll supply
the OS backend for GS/OS and the front end for the ORCA shell. I will
also hand-compile it into 6502 so it'll run on any // (just like
binscii is now). Because the code is machine ignorant, some of you
may strengthen your HLL vs assembly argument. I want to avoid
duplicate effort, so when I'm getting ready to release, I'll enlist
whoever wants to to direct the port effort to individual platforms.
More on that later.

The encoded files will be OS-independant. Therefore, a GS version can
decode a file made on a unix box.

Decoding will be much more tolerant of defects in the file.

Individual segements may be up to 64k big (user configurable -
defaults to 12k).

Individual segment files, when created, can have any number of
segments in them (user configurable - defaults to 1).

Decoder will be able to decode old style (current) BinSCII segments.

Non-segment data (mail headers and such) will be dumped to a log file.

It's my sincere hope that BinSCII 2 will displace uuencode and
BinHex, and of course, BinSCII.

The next // version of BinSCII to hit the market will be version 1.1,
which will have a much nicer UI than you all are using. It will
encode current-style segments and decode current and new style. Once
it gains acceptance, BinSCII 2 will be released. This is to insure
that everyone will have a new-style segment decoder.

Send your suggestions now while development is in the early stages!

  Thanx in advance.

Can someone send me the NDA that will BINSCII programs? I don't need the
one that will UNSCII programs. I need a BINSCII'er. Already have an
UNBINSCII'er. Help me out guys?

BTW- You can BINSCII it and send it since I have an UNbinsciier

You need a later version of GScii+. The most recent (that I know of)
is version 2.1 (it's not beta anymore). It will encode Binscii.
