I've been using TeX for some time, mostly to format exisiting documentation. So I'm not a TeXpert nor a TeXnician. Now I have the opportunity :-( to build TeX from scratch. Well, playing with the TeX distribution surely reminds me to my hours of playing Adventure (the original one): stumbling from directory to directory to collect README files, looking for Makefiles, looking for a place to start... It can really use a "make world" like X11. After a number of hours (my time, CPU time about 10 minutes), I had initex, virtex, inimf and virmf, and the undumped versions for tex and latex. I also had the styles and tfm files in place, and added dvi2ps (version 3.1). Now I can build dvi files and print them on a PostScript printer. What I have not solved yet is how to create the 'pk'-fonts. I know it has something to do with MetaFont, but actually I got lost in the README files. If someone can tell me how it must be done, I would appreciate it.
