[comp.text.tex] TeX manual/MF for the PC

weisen@eniac.seas.upenn.edu (Neil Weisenfeld) (03/05/90)

2 questions for the TeXies out there:

Where can I get Donald Knuth's TeXbook. Is it available as TeX source or
must it be purchased pre-printed?

From what I've read, it seems like I'm going to have to get metafont and
some metafont sources to generate .PKs for my Gemini 10x (9-pin dot matrix)
printer. Has anyone compiled MF for the PC? Where can I get it? Am I
right in assuming that our .PKs for a cannon laser engine will not work
correctly? Does anyone know the proper MF settings for a Gemini 10x?

Thanks in advance,
Neil

It must be purchased pre-printed (printing your own is a violation of US
and international copyright law, so don't do it). If your campus bookstore
doesn't have it, yell at them, then think about ordering a copy from the
TeX Users Group:
   P.O. Box 9506
   Providence, RI 02940-9506
   401-751-7760
   internet: tug@math.ams.com
(best to try e-mail first, I'm doing this from memory, and nobody's
said anything that required posting the address and phone number for
a while).

You'll probably want to join TUG while you're at it. TUGboat, their journal
is a highly useful resource. It's $35 for most people in the US, $25 for
students. Outside N. America, rates are somewhat higher.

PK files are resolution-dependent so unless your Gemini has a resolution
of 300x300, the fonts won't even come close to being useful. Jon Radel
has many wonderful Public Domain TeX things for the PC, including a
version or two of MF, pre-generated PK files, previewers, and printer
drivers. Here is his address:

Notes: Software is distributed on 5.25" 360K floppy disks. For floppies
sent with a return mailer, there is a charge of $1.50/floppy
U.S. orders, $2/floppy elsewhere. For orders where floppies
are supplied by Jon Radel, there is a charge of $5/floppy
for U.S., Mexican and Canadian orders, $6/floppy elsewhere.
