[comp.text.tex] Spelling Checkers

ted@nieland.DAYTON.OH.US (Ted Nieland) (03/06/90)

In article 1148daiyingshi@yvax.byu.edu, daiyingshi@yvax.byu.edu comments that
several of the sites listed in previous message weren't accessible to get
DeTeX or ISPELL. He also asks about Spelling Checkers for VAX/VMS that work
with TeX.

There is a Spelling Checker for VAX/VMS that works with TeX. It is freeware.
It is excellant. I think it is better than ISPELL (or the implementations of
ISPELL that I have seen). The program is VASSAR SPELL and it is available on
the DECUS TeX Collection which you can get from the DECUS Library or from your
DECUS LUG.

VASSAR SPELL use the SMG routnes in VMS to give you a very nice (for ascii
terminals) windows-like screen format. It does all sorts of neat
things, including intercepting broadcast messages and putting them in
their own window. It has a large dictionary and allows for private
dictionaries. People can select to add words to the master dictionary,
but they get put in a provisional dictionary until the system manager
(or whoever has the privs) adds them to the master dictionary.

VASSAR SPELL not only works with TeX and LaTeX, it also works with VMS
RUNOFF and SCRIBE.

The latest release of the DECUS TeX Collection is August 1989 and contains
a very large amount of TeX Material for VAX/VMS, MS-DOS, Macintosh, and UNIX.
The DECUS TeX Collection can be obtained from the DECUS Library (reference
number VS0058) or from your DECUS LUG (Local User Group) (ask for the
DECUS TeX Collection).

Outside of the United States, contact your DECUS Office about getting a copy
of the DECUS TeX Collection
