I would like to adapt LaTeX in order to use it simultaneously, both for German and English. The modifications of the style files (article, report, book) are straightforward by using variables for the keywords 'abstract', 'contents', etc. and then setting these variables in the corresponding style files or overwriting them in the 'german.sty' file. The only problem occurs with hyphenations. They are included while building a LaTeX format file with 'initex'. I would like to use only one format file for the English and German style. Is there an appropriate way to modify the file 'lplain.tex' and build a new format file so one can switch between German and English hyphenations at 'run time' just by setting a variable in the 'german.sty' file, which defines also several other features of the German language ? The switch between hyphenation patterns requires TeX 2.992 or later
(3.0 has just been announced). However, before wasting your time
duplicating others' efforts, you should probably think about joining
DANTE, the German speaking TeX Users Group. For more information
