[comp.text.tex] TeX: Figures in center of two columns. How?

d89mb@efd.lth.se (Magnus Bodin) (05/30/90)

I produce a tiny newsletter using TeX (2.93) and I use to set my pages in 3 or
2 columns. I use simple \vsplit and \vtop methods for accomplishing that. I have
done a few experiments with \parshape ... ... but I think it's a bit awkward
for my purposes. I now want to set a part of a page like this, with a figure
in the center of two columns, perhaps with \vrule (where I've put the |'s) in between.
How am I supposed to do? Must I necessary split both columns in two
paragraphs with no \parskip or \parindent and then use \hangindent and
\hangafter? Or can I use \parshape in a smart way? Or is it any other
intricate way to do it?

                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | bbbbbbbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | bbbbbbbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | bbbbbbbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaa the bbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaa figure bbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaa is bbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaa put bbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaa here bbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | bbbbbbbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | bbbbbbbbbbbbb
                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | bbbbbbbbbbbbb

It's not so funny to split it like this

                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | ccccccccccccc
                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | ccccccccccccc
                   aaaaaaaaaaaaa | ccccccccccccc
                   bbbbbbbb the dddddddd
                   bbbbbbbb figure dddddddd
                   bbbbbbbb is dddddddd
                   bbbbbbbb put dddddddd
                   bbbbbbbb here dddddddd
                   bbbbbbbbbbbbb | ddddddddddddd
                   bbbbbbbbbbbbb | ddddddddddddd
                   bbbbbbbbbbbbb | ddddddddddddd

Or can I use \parshape in a smart way? Or is it any other
intricate way to do it?

and if it's easy :-) Can I use figures of different shapes? Circles?
