[comp.text.tex] Help laying out side by side boxes.

randy@rls.UUCP (Randall L. Smith) (06/07/90)

Greetings,

I have recently entered the world of TeX under Unix. Although I have
"The TeXbook" (only got to chapter 5), I am most impressed at TeX's
flexibility and somewhat shallow learning curve. Well, at least I have
been able to produce most anything so far. This one has me stuck.

I'm interested in laying out a resume with what has been a difficult
layout. Probably only difficult to the uninitiated. Anyway the layout
would look like;

	May	Contract consulting services for client corporations in a
 	1987	variety of capacities on a broad range of hardware and
	 to	software systems. Primary work involves Vax/Vms, Unix, and
       Present TCP/IP, Decnet and SNA networked environments. Blah, blah
		blah, and so on, and on and on, ho de do, hey hey, tweedle-
		dee, ballyhoo and bs.

Since the length of the text "box" won't really be known till print
time, tabs seem the incorrect method besides being darned difficult to
implement here.

How do I set the text (potentially with its own font) into a separate
box from the dates? Further, the dates should be centered in their own
box. Ideally, the "boxes" dimensions would be easily definable. Finally,
to store them in the format below. Ignoring the \vbox command, they
should stay separate for easy future editing, thusly;

\vbox {May 1987 to Present}

\vbox {Contract consulting services for client corporations in a variety
of capacities on a broad range of hardware and software systems. Primary
work involves Vax/Vms, Unix, and TCP/IP, Decnet and SNA networked
environments. Blah, blah blah, and so on, and on and on, ho de do, hey
hey, tweedledee, ballyhoo and bs.}

No problem, right? :-) If any of the Gurus of this group have a handy
solution, it would be most appreciated. I saw the stuff on \parshape
but haven't found a good example to demonstrate its abilities.

I'd appreciate e-mail, because we're losing i-nodes from time to time on
the news disk partition and won't be able to fix it for another week or
two. I'd be happy to summarize for the net, if there is any interest.

Cheers!
