The versions of dvips and dvi2ps that we happen to have both have difficulties, and we want to find out if there are later versions, etc., that overcome them. Here are the details: dvips 4.2 - does not understand all psfig specials (notably pstext); also gives errors for some of the .tfm files (ones that came with dvi2ps 3.1). The specific error message is "invalid design size". dvi2ps 3.1 - does not generate ps files that are as compact as dvips; dvips also seems to be a little better at automatically including necessary .pro files (e.g., when using builtin PostScript fonts). psfig 1.2 is the version we have. I am looking into dvips version 5.02 to see if it resolves any of this, but would appreciate guidance from those up on the latest dvi to ps tools. Thanks! -- J. Eliot B. I think this is a slight misunderstanding of the psfig package; psfig
has to be slightly emended for each dvi to PS converter, as the syntax
of \special's is not very standardized. If your psfig does not use the
the same \special as your dvips, then read the dvips documentation and
edit your psfig to have the syntax dvips wants. It is not at all
difficult - \special only occurs in about 3 places in psfig.
