METAPLOT by Pat Wilcox is a nice system which allows one to take HPGL files and produce PK/TFM pairs containing the graphics and a other things you might want to consider (depending on your environment): + pictex macros by Michael Wichura. excellent results, but large and slow + fig package under Sunview or X windows. convert to Pictex or LaTeX picture or pic + the `pic' language; James Clark has recently his gnu `pic' recently, which outputs `tpic' \specials. you need a conformant dvi driver for that + gnuplot, outputting LaTeX picture commands all of these routes permit you to enter the verbiage on the picture in TeXese.
