Hi all, I have an idea..correct me if I am wrong..I would like to include pictures in LaTeX using Metafont characters. The pictures that I have are 320 X 200 16 grey scale. Is it possible to create a charcter set using Metafont to represent these levels of grey scale. i.e. I would like to have the characters 0 -> F where 0 is blank and F is black with various levels of fill in between. Each of these characters would be 0.5mm by 0.5mm. I could then convert my pictures to :- 0000012345.....320 wide.....54321000 \newline 0000001234..................43210000 \newline for 200 rows, having the row spacing of zero. Can someone give me some pointers as to how to do it, I have just bought the Metafont book but I am still far from being able to use it. Thanks for any help. Robin Smith elev35@uk.ac.ed.castle

The answer lies in TUGboat where there have been two articles on the topic, one by Donald Knuth, the other by Adrian Clarke. These articles appeared in TUGboat 8#2 and 8#3 respectively. In the UK, you can get back issues through Aston University: contact Peter Abbott (abbottp@uk.ac.aston) for details. I believe Aston may also have the halftoning fonts and macros. -dh --- Don Hosek TeX, LaTeX, and Metafont Consulting and dhosek@ymir.claremont.edu production work.
