I just happened to notice that splain.tex doesn't have \lefthyphenmin=2 or \righthyphenmin=3, as do plain.tex and lplain.tex. (Amsplain.tex gets it through plain.tex.) Why not? I don't see why it doesn't need it. Thanks.... ....Mary p.s. I ftp'd them from ymir.claremont.edu.

It does need it, I just haven't updated the splain.tex file (the lplain.tex on ymir is semi-official; the changes have been supplied by Frank Mittelbach who is heading up the development of LaTeX 3.0, but Leslie Lamport hasn't supplied his imprimatur yet). I'll get an updated splain.tex up on ymir sometime in the next few days and announce it in comp.text.tex -dh --- Don Hosek TeX, LaTeX, and Metafont Consulting and dhosek@ymir.claremont.edu production work.
