[comp.text.tex] XeT ??

engelson-sean@cs.yale.edu (Wisp Lizard) (07/18/90)

Does anyone have any information about a version of TeX called XeT, that
can typeset from right to left (in addition to left to right?)? Where
can I get it?

Thanks.

  +WHAT IS TeX-XeT?
TeX-XeT is a version of TeX modified to handle mixed
Left-to-right and right-to-left texts. It was announced and
described in TUGboat Volume 8 Number 1. Sometime in the future,
TeX-XeT change files for TeX 3.0 will be made available from
LISTSERV@TAUNIVM. No TeX-XeT implementation on the IBM PC is
   known at this time.

TeX-XeT writes a special format of DVI files with a DVI version
number of 3. In order for these DVI files to be processed by
normal DVI drivers, they must first be pre-processed using the
ivd2dvi program written by Larry Denenberg. The most recent
version of this program may be FTP'd from ymir.claremont.edu in
   the directory [anonymous.tex.babel.hebrew.ivd2dvi] or obtained
via BITNET by sending the command GET IVD2DVI PACKAGE to
   LISTSERV@TAUNIVM.

+WHAT ALTERNATIVES TO TeX-XeT ARE AVAILABLE?
While the preferred method for handling right-to-left
typesetting is TeX-XeT, this program is not universally
available at this time. To get around this problem, several
   work-arounds have been developed:
SEMITIC.STY by Grahame McKinstry is a macro-based solution for
LaTeX which will automatically reverse all text inside the
semitic environment. This technique has many shortcomings
which are described in that file. It can be obtained from
     ymir.claremont.edu in the directory
[anonymous.tex.babel.hebrew.macros] or via BITNET by sending
the command GET SEMITIC STY to LISTSERV@TAUNIVM.
PRTEX/SUPRTEX by Jacques Goldberg and Stephen Wood is a
pre-processor written in portable C which reverses the text
prior to TeXing. PRTEX is a "vanilla" version of the
preprocessor and SUPRTEX is an extended one allowing one to
use any coding for the Hebrew letters that one likes (handy
for those of us without Hebrew keyboards). This program may
be obtained from ymir.claremont.edu in the directory
     [anonymous.tex.babel.hebrew.prtex] with the associated macros
     residing in [anonymous.tex.babel.hebrew.macros] Via Bitnet,
the files can be obtained by sending the command GET IVRITEX
     PACKAGE to LISTSERV@TAUNIVM.
