[comp.text.tex] GhostScript problem when previewing dvips output with psfont.sty

cca13@seq1.keele.ac.uk (G.D. Pratt) (07/20/90)

I just got Ghostscript version 1.4beta3 ( the free ****Script interpreter from
FSF ) working on a Sequent Symmetry with X11R4

To my surprise I found it could deal with the dreaded output from dvips
(version 4.0 (C) 1987-9 Radical Eye Software) and allows you to preview
(slowly) LaTeX documents with embedded ****Script figures before sending
them to the printer.

However I could not get it to deal with dvips output which came from
document using the "psfont.sty" mechanism to use ****Script fonts. It only
works when the Computer Modern fonts are used and the font definition is
downloaded to the printer.

It throws up this :-

Loading font file tim_b.gsf... done.

but unfortunately my knowledge of ****Script errors is rudimentary/missing.

Has anyone else seen this problem or know waht the solution might be?

cheers,
gerry

This could be a bug in the tex.ps prolog file which is part of dvips,
or it could be merely a problem of configuring the mapping of tex font
names to builtin font names.

I've been beta testing GS 1.4beta3. It will preview latex documents
set in CM fonts for the text and builtin fonts for included EPS
figures. In fact, you can set up dvips to generate the 72 dpi fonts
on the fly, and they are legible in the ghostscript window.

Being able to preview included postscript figures and CM fonts is a
big win for ghostscript. No other free software will do this. I hope
it encourages more support for the ghostscript project.

Anybody out there want to help Peter? We've got a great reason here
to get the project going.
