[comp.text.tex] Friendly TeX interface

lhamey@mqccsunb.mqcc.mq.OZ (Len Hamey) (07/25/90)

We are tossing up between TeX/LaTeX/LamsTeX and a word processor
(such as Lotus Manuscript) for secretarial use. The advantages of
TeX and friends are obvious, especially to me, but the user
friendliness of word processors is also considered highly desirable,
especially for repetitive tasks such as letter writing.

Question: Is there a friendly interface that produces TeX output
or (even better) that can edit TeX files (a limited subset would be
acceptable) in the word processor manner? Surely such a thing exists,
or am I the only person dreaming of the best of both worlds?

I have heard of a filter for conversion of Wordmill into TeX.
At our site we are using one to convert hebrew documents into
hebrew TeX documents. It runs quite well and the users seem to
be pretty happy about it.

Personally, I tend to prefer writing LaTeX, using predefined
styles and the emacs editor with my own custom functions.
While this would tend to be a bit more than what your average
non-hacker user would want to handle, it is possible to
prepare form types for him and have him merely input the
arguments and text.
