[comp.text.tex] How to add a Preface?

I am trying to include a preface in  a paper after the table of contents, 
much like that in Lamport's LaTeX manual. I notice there is an
\appendix command,
a \listoffigures command, 
a \listoftables command,
a \chapter{stuff..} command

but no

\preface command!

Can anyone tell me how to include a section that has heading 
"Preface" and is otherwise treated as a chapter?
