[comp.text.tex] Footnotes to captions in floating figures/tables in LaTeX: How?

elton@lll-crg.llnl.gov (Bracy H. Elton) (08/23/90)

What I'd like to do: Include footnotes in the \caption[]{} LaTeX
command in the figure and table environments. The text of the
footnote should appear in the footer to the page on which the floated
figure or table appears. I would use the optional argument to
\caption to avoid having the caption footnoted in the list of
figures/tables.

Question: Can this be done? And if so, how?

I have tried using varying combinations of the \footnote{}, \footnotemark{},
and \footnotetext{} commands to no avail.  I tried placing the \footnotetext{}
command both inside and outside the \caption{} argument.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. --Bracy
