[comp.text.tex] I

csfst1@unix.cis.pitt.edu (Charles S. Fuller) (08/29/90)

Pardon what may be a stupid question, but ...

I'm new to TeX, having known about it for years but having no need to
install it. Recently, I picked up the imaketex tar file from stanford
and commenced to build TeX using the files contained therein. All was
going well, until:

       making all in .//usr/local/tex/web...
make: Fatal error: Don't know how to make target `tangle.web'
       Current working directory /usr/local/tex/web
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/mf...
make: Fatal error: Don't know how to make target `mf.web'
       Current working directory /usr/local/tex/mf
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/mfware...
make: Fatal error: Don't know how to make target `gftopk.web'
       Current working directory /usr/local/tex/mfware
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/tex...
make: Fatal error: Don't know how to make target `tex.web'
       Current working directory /usr/local/tex/tex
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/texware...
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/etc...
make: Fatal error: Don't know how to make target `vptovf.web'
       Current working directory /usr/local/tex/etc
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/cm...
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/lib...
       making all in .//usr/local/tex/glue...

A quick check of the Makefile's in the respective directories found
no entries for the *.web targets. Am I missing something, or just some
of the software?

Thanks in advance.
Chuck Fuller

The file labrea.stanford.edu:pub/imaketex101.tar.Z contains only the
web2c programs and the imake system for TeX on Unix machines. You
must also ftp the files in some of the directories in
labrea.stanford.edu:pub/tex. Read the file IMAKETEX.README in the top
level directory of imaketex101.tar.Z. It tells you what directories
you need (actually you don't need fonts even though it says so).

Please send bug reports to ramsdell@mitre.org.
