[comp.text.tex] Improper use of Usenet

DLV@CUNYVMS1.BITNET (09/05/90)

Many thanks to Don Hosek for collecting the information on free & cheap
TeX's for MS-DOS!!! (Note: you could have also mentioned that some, but
not all, of them claim to run under OS/2---I'm about to see how well I
can make emTeX run under OS/2 on a 3COM network and will report the
results. :)

By the way, I've been cringing for the last few weeks at Don's .sig:

>Don Hosek TeX, LaTeX, and Metafont support, consulting
>dhosek@ymir.claremont.edu installation and production work.
>dhosek@ymir.bitnet Free Estimates.
>uunet!jarthur!ymir Phone: 714-625-0147
> finger dhosek@ymir.claremont.edu for more info

but didn't say anything... But the following quote really jarred me:

> ... (note:
>do _not_ send the query directly to me or I'll respond with a
>polite note indicating that I cannot respond to direct inquiries
>unless they're paid for.)

Don, let me emphasize that I (and, I'm sure, everyone else who reads
comp.text.tex) really appreciates your patience in answering everyone's
questions, and if we criticize you, it's for your your benefit. :)
In this case I think you're overstepping the bounds of acceptable use of
Usenet. You should not post unsolicited promotional materials for your
consulting services.
