Are there different versions of *.mf files? I am trying to build
msym and msxm fonts in pk format at 406dpi and I just picked up
the *.mf files from the labrea.stanford.edu archive and when I run
version 1.5 of METAFONT on one I get this:-
cmmf '\mode:=agfa;' input msxm5
This is METAFONT, C Version 1.5 (no base preloaded)
(mfs/msxm5.mf
American Math Society Symbols 5 point -- 1st extra font
>> fontidentifier
! Isolated expression.

"MSXM"
l.3 fontidentifier "MSXM"

So I had a look at cminch.mf which I CAN build and the top 10 lines look
like this:-
% Computer Modern Inch-High Sans Serif Bold Extended Caps and Digits
if unknown cmbase: input cmbase fi
numeric Pt#; 250/36Pt#=1in#;
font_identifier:="CMINCH"; font_size 10Pt#;
u#:=22/36Pt#; % unit width
width_adj#:=22/36Pt#; % width adjustment for certain characters
serif_fit#:=-9/36Pt#; % extra sidebar near lowercase serifs
cap_serif_fit#:=-11/36Pt#; % extra sidebar near uppercase serifs
letter_fit#:=0Pt#; % extra space added to all sidebars
whereas the top 10 lines of msxm5.mf look like this:-
"American Math Society Symbols 5 point -- 1st extra font";
% based on "old" Computer Modern
fontidentifier "MSXM"; ptsize=5;
pww=5/36; % small hairline width
puw=8/36; % uppercase hairline width
pscorr=.7/36; % some stems to be this much thinner
pbow=.7/36; % baseline serifs to be bowed by this much
phcorr=.5/36; % some hairlines to be this much thicker
pdot=22/36; % dots
the same sort of data is in them, eg "font_identifier" vs. "fontidentifier"
but in a different format - what goes on here? Do the *.mf files from the
American Math Society have differences from the cm fonts.
Any help/pointers welcome.
cheers,
gerry
