I posted a question about installing AmSTeX 2.0 on a Sparcstation running TeX 2.991. Virtex ran out of string space when trying to use amsppt.sty. After some effort, I managed to get it to work by increasing the poolsize parameter from 45000 to 60000. What appears strange is that the actual space provided in the previous version was only about 22,500 and the amount under the new version is about 33,000. Presumably there is some bug in setting this constant in this C version of TeX. Does anyone understand this?
