The Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge,
Massachusetts, sponsors free programs in popular astronomy for the
general public on the third Thursday of every month. The "Observatory
Nights" feature a lecture, film, and weather permitting, telescopic
observing on the observatory roof.

The lectures are nontechnical, but they are intended for adult and
high school audiences. No tickets or reservations are required; however,
seating is to the capacity of the hall and filled on a first-come basis.
Doors open at 7:30 PM and programs begin at 8 PM. Upcoming lectures given
by Center for Astrophysics scientists include:

January 19: "Looking Through a Cosmic Camera: Gravitational
Lenses in Space" - Marc Gorenstein

February 16: "A New View of the Universe in Color" - Rudy
                     Schild

March 15: "Using the Shuttle's External Tank for
                     Astronomy" - David Koch

April 19: "Quasars" - Martin Elvis

May 17: "Black Holes and Curved Space Time" - Jennie Traschen

June 21: "In the Beginning: The Formation of the Earth" -
                     Mike Lecar

All programs will be held in Phillips Auditorium of the Center for
Astrophysics at 60 Garden Street, Cambridge, Massachusetts, about
one mile west of Harvard Square. Entrance to the Auditorium is at
the west of the Center complex, near the Madison St. entrance and
large parking lot. The Center may also be easily reached by public
transportation. From the Harvard MBTA station (Red Line) take any
bus or trackless trolley going west on Concord Avenue (Park Circle
and Belmont buses, Huron Avenue trolleys) and get off at "Observatory
Hill."

For more information, call the Public Affairs office (617) 495-7461.
