In the distribution set I got, there were two copies of tex.poo,
both in different directories.
(a) One of these two files was corrupted. Both are the same
size. How to find the bad egg: say 'tail tex.poo' at each and
the bad guy has junk, the good guy has english. (Now the "junk"
could well be german or french or something!)
I killed the bad guy.
(b) In any case, the trouble had been at initex, he'd say
"tex.pool file must start with 2 numbers" when the top of either
tex.poo file felt fine. He gives this error even when he can't
*find* the file!
I just put the working (noncorrupted) tex.poo file into all
directories concievable. TEXFMTS, TEXFMTS.386, TEXINPUTS, maybe
a few others. Basically, carpetbombing.
Now initex works.
