I recently FTPed tex.web and tex.vms-changes from ymir.claremont.edu. Running these files through Tangle produces the error: This is TANGLE, Vax/VMS Version 4 *1*17*25*38*54*72*99*110*115*133*162*173*199*203*207*211*220*256*268*289*297*300 *321*332*366*402*464*487*511*539*583*592*644*680*699 *719*768*813*862*891*900*919*942*967*980*1029*1055*1136*1208*1299*1330*1338*1340 *1379*1380 ! Change file entry did not match. (change file l.574) \def\drop{\kern-.1667em\lower.5ex\hbox{E}\kern-.125em} % middle of TeX Writing the output file.....500.....1000.....1500.....2000.....2500.....3000.....3500.....4000..... 4500.....5000.....5500.... Done. 1040 strings written to string pool file. (Pardon me, but I think I spotted something wrong.) I did happen to notice that the version number defined in the banner of tex.web is 3.1, the version number defined in the banner of tex.vms-changes is 3.0. Could this be the problem? Compiling tex.pas produced by the Tangle session above produces errors on WRITELN(TERMOUT); statements. TERMOUT is defined to be an ALPHAFILE, ALPHAFILE is a PACKED FILE OF CHAR. VAX Pascal wants TERMOUT to be a file of TEXT. (BTW, I'm using VAX Pascal v4.0-2.) Any ideas? Gee, I only got the new WEB last Friday, you know. Anyway, the change file as of about ten minutes ago is updated. Also involved is a minor update to the change file and cld (there is a new parameter /eight_bit which can be used to force creation of fmt files which will use ^^c0 through ^^ff rather than simply printing those characters. (Technical difficulties have prevented this being a TeX rather than IniTeX feature in this release.) I intend to update the other change files as time permits.. -dh btw, I believe that the VMS TeX distribution has just set a new release-to-implementation record for an update to TeX.
