[comp.text.tex] dvips that generates needed fonts from mf source

winkler@cunixf.cc.columbia.edu (Andrew Winkler) (10/16/90)

Is anyone working on (or is there available) a postscript filter for dvi files
that is capable of generating fonts on the fly? I have a fast machine, limited
disk space, and sporadic use for certain fonts...

I recall discussion of this once upon a time, but I don't know if such a thing
ever existed.

Yes, there is such a program. The version I use is named dvips version 4.1
from Radical Eye Software. I'm pretty sure it's the version that I got with
my TeX 2.95 distribution from gatekeeper.dec.com

It uses a script called MakeTeXPK to generate *.pk files from the METAFONT
sources. It's very convenient.
