The fire in the APU bay was not, as we all know, detected until well after landing. In looking over some published shuttle design data I was suprised to discover that the Shuttle's fire detection system only covers the pressurized portions of the spacecraft. There are no fire detection points, apparently, aft of the cabin bulkhead, and the only areas with fire suppression gear are the avionics bays. Are some changes planned in this area?
