Thanks to all the people who suggested different sources for a HP DeskJet
DVI driver.
1. Somebody suggested the LaserJet driver dvilj, written by Gustaf Neumann,
was also suitable for use with a DeskJet. It wasn't. That must have been
a rumour in the Dutch TeX community.
2. I compiled the driver from Beebe's driver family, using the modifications by
Paul Kirkaas. Some changes were necessary because we use Turbo C instead
of Microsoft C, which was originally used to compile the source.
Alas, it needs 1MB RAM, which I don't have.
3. Finally, a few people suggested the driver dvihplj from the emTeX
distribution. I ftp'd it from directory ~/msdos/text-mgmt/TeX/emtex/disk3
on terminator.cc.umich.edu and it works just fine. Executables and
adequate documentation are provided in ZIP files.
