[net.space] Reply from NOAA to L5 Letter Campaign

daemon@decwrl.UUCP (01/16/84)

From: dvinci::fisher  (Burns Fisher, MRO3-1/E13, 231-4108)

In December, I responded to a suggestion from the L5 Society to write
letters to several government officials, including the President, and the
Secretary of Commerce. Readers of this digest might be interested in the
following reply which I received from Anthony J. Calio of the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA):

<<begin quote>>

Thank you for your recent letter to Secretary of Commerce
Baldrige supporting manned activities in space. The decision
whether to seek funds for these projects is an important issue
within the Administration and one that will have significant
implications for our economy and technological base. However,
major new programs must be carefully considered in light of
the severe budget deficits that exist.

The President has all the necessary information to
evaluate this issue. It is one that will get his careful
attention. I appreciate your expression of support.

		Sincerely,

		Anthony J. Calio
		Deputy Administrator

I am fairly sure that the entire letter was manually typed, and not word
processed. It was certainly hand signed. I fear this may imply that
there was not much mail on the subject.

Burns
